How Many Wallets Should You Own, Realistically?

Wallets are, in many ways, our most functional accessory, even more so than belts. We not only carry it on us every day, but we also use it AND we consider it a part of our outfit, making our choice in wallets that much more important. 

Most of us, however, only have one wallet – a primary wallet. We keep everything in that wallet and then take that wallet with us wherever we go. But how many wallets do you really need?

Wallets as an Accessory

Remember, wallets are designed to be a functional accessory. People typically switch wallets out when they need a wallet for different uses, or when they just want a different wallet to go with a specific outfit or style. It’s impossible to have too many wallets, even though many other people prefer to have only a single one.

That said, if you are one to be prepared, the following wallets are typically recommended to have on hand:

• One Everyday Wallet – It is good to have a wallet that you can carry with you everywhere that you go; one that can be on your person at all times. Usually, this is a wallet that is the perfect size for your pocket and the items you usually carry, and made of a high enough quality that you feel confident carrying it with you in most settings. Most people have a wallet that they use on daily basis.
• One Passport Wallet – If you travel, however, you will also want a passport wallet. Wallets are not designed to carry passports, but there is no better way to carry a passport with you than to have a wallet with a passport pocket that can be used to keep the passport in a safe and secure place with easy access. 
• One Sport Wallet/Daily Travel Wallet – You may also want an inexpensive, easy to use sport wallet. Sport wallets have two uses. First, you can use it for when you’re engaging in outdoor activities and need something breathable and thin for only a few required cards or cash. Second, you need your passport wallet to travel, but once you’re in your hotel, you don’t carry your passport on you at all times. Having a sport wallet that you can use on your vacations when your passport is not needed is a great way to reduce the risk of losing your passport. 
• Optional: One Formal Wallet – We create some incredibly high quality nylon wallets, along with leather wallets in some amazing colors. Most people that buy our wallets use one of these colorful options. But if you’re someone that is frequently in truly formal settings, you may want to reach into your pocket and bring out, for example, a blue leather wallet with a vibrant green interior. So, keeping a formal wallet available can be a good choice. 
• Optional: One Storage Wallet – You’re giving a LOT of cards to carry in your life, and most of the time you won’t carry any of them. Store credit cards, insurance cards, business cards, loyalty cards, and so much more. Yet you don’t need to carry most of them, especially with Apple Pay and related platforms. But you still need to house them. You can consider one very large wallet that you keep at home at all times, allowing you to switch cards, IDs, and more as needed.

You can, of course, live with one wallet. But if you’re trying to truly accessorize and be ready for any situation, you need about 3 wallets, with 2 additional optional wallets depending on your first wallet choices.
