Your Wallet: A Companion Through Major Life Events
Wallets are designed to be special. They’re designed to be kept. Choosing a wallet is supposed to be like choosing a car – something that you drive as long as possible, creating loads of memories along the way.
We know that for some people, this sounds silly. Many of us do not think of our wallets as an investment, or as an important part of major life events. But that is typically only true of those that are used to replacing their wallets every few years. Those that invest in a true lifelong wallet know that sometimes wallets can mean so much more.
“I was given a new leather wallet when I turned 15,” said Mike. “At some point in my early 30s, I had to retire my wallet due to accidentally damaging it in water. I almost cried. There were so many memories tied to that wallet that I didn’t know I had. There was a small square indent where my first girlfriend put a small sticker of her face. There was a rectangular line caused by my first driver’s license. There was a secret pocket in the wallet that I kept a special photo of my now-wife that she gave me right when we started dating. That wallet was with me through so many major life events.”
This story by Mike is one that we’ve heard often from the people that have invested in an heirloom wallet – the type of wallet that you are expected to keep for decades. We genuinely receive some of the most beautiful messages from customers that have used our wallets and taken it with them through major special events in their lives. Here are some that we received in the past 10 days alone:
- “That Allett wallet went everywhere with me, from Vietnam to Greece, and it still goes everywhere with me. Thanks for the help with a replacement. I will probably die before a new Allett wallet wears out. Your products don’t seem to have planned obsolescence built in.” ~Dabney
- “I bought the first one about 20+ years ago. You guys were a fairly new, small company. Used that wallet until it started to fall apart. Replaced it with the same plain black design. I remember it arrived in the mail housed only in a very thin plain envelope. You might have used a postage stamp to mail it. Zero fancy packaging of any kind. Just the same high quality product like my first one. That was something like 12-15 years ago. Bottom line: I loved my first two and I know I’ll love this one too. And, it might actually outlast me !! Thank you for producing such a wonderful product.” ~ Gary
Our customers will often email us with a picture of their old wallet, or we get a letter in the mail with an old, crispy wallet tucked into the envelope. Some say they’ve carried our wallet for about 15+ years. You can tell because the nylon has softened up, or the leather is as soft as fabric. We get customers that send us pictures of their old wallet next to their new one, after they’ve reordered from us 20 years later.
One customer of ours wrote to us about their wallet – a wallet they named “Greenie.” They told an entire story, which we shared on our website a while back. You can read about it here.
These stories are not rare. We get them all the time. They don’t always make sense to someone that is used to regularly switching their cheap wallet out every few years. But that is because even designer wallets tend to have a really short lifespan. They’re a way to showcase a brand, not meant to be in your pocket through all of your life experiences.
But when you choose a truly high quality wallet – an heirloom wallet that will last you for well over a decade – you’ll start to notice that it’s the only thing that you still have 10, 15, and 20+ years down the road that you always have on you:
- First Car
- First Date
- College Graduation
- Travel Experiences
- Proposal
- Kids and More
Your clothes will fall apart. Your belt will break. Your ID will need to be updated every 5 years. Your car will break down. Most of the products you buy in your life will not be with you each and every day. But your wallet will be. The right high quality wallet, made with high end materials, will be at your side every day, 365 days a year, for more than 10 years.
When you have something with you through all these major events – something that you have with you each and every day – you’ll be surprised how quickly it means something to you. It’s a keepsake that you will begin to cherish, and one that you’ll be sad about when it is finally time to retire.
But to find that wallet, you need something made with the highest quality materials that can last for as long as you need it. Learn more about our leather and nylon wallets, and see why our wallets are the companions you’ll be writing us about in the future.
