What Are the Warning Signs That Your Wallet is Nearing Its End?

Here at Allett, it’s not an exaggeration to say that we handcraft our wallets with premier, long lasting materials. Our leather wallets are genuine Napa leather, our nylon wallets are made with a type of premium nylon known as “ripstop,” and our seams are designed to last for years – if not decades – without breaking down.

Still, every wallet has a lifespan. Even the most high-end wallet will eventually experience damage the more it is used, and since our wallet are all designed to be daily use wallets, you may find a time when yours is in need of replacement.

Long before that replacement is necessary, there are going to be warning signs that your wallet is nearing the end of its life, and while there is no real harm in waiting until your wallet has literally fallen apart before replacing it, sometimes it’s nice to know in advance so you can start looking at your next wallet (cough cough our product list cough).

Early Warning Signs of an Aging Wallet

Most of the warning signs that your wallet is reaching the end of its lifespan are going to be visible to you fairly early on. But the easiest signs that your wallet is nearing its end include:

  • Rips – Assuming your wallet is fairly high end, it should not have any rips in it, not even if it’s nylon. Usually, any rip at all, even a small one, is a sign that the material has thinned considerably due to friction and is probably nearing the end of its life.
  • Cracks – Top tier Nappa leather only cracks when it is old, dry, unmaintained, and extremely used. You should expect your leather to stay smooth and soft for years. But if those cracks occur, then your wallet has probably seen better days.
  • Credit Card Pockets Lose Shape – If the pockets of the wallet have started to lose shape to the point where they are no longer able to hold cards effectively, that is usually a sign that the wallet is older, and certainly a sign that the wallet is less useful than it was in the past.
  • Water Damage – Most of our wallets, at least, are designed with some degree of water protection. But between rain, spills, etc., sometimes too much water can cause damage to the wallet. Visible damage that doesn’t wash away could be a sign that the wallet is not likely to last much longer.

These are the early warning signs, of course. As your wallet ages, it may quite literally fall apart or show very clearly visible signs that a new wallet is needed.

Of course, not all early signs your wallet is nearing the end of its lifespan have to do with the quality of the wallet. Sometimes, it has to do with you changing as a person.

For example, when you’re older, you need a thin wallet that can stay in your front pocket. Back pocket wallets will cause you immense back pain. Similarly, if you’ve taken up biking, you’ll need a wallet that is breathable. If you’re someone that takes lots of photos, you may want a wall that does not bulge out of your pants.

These are all examples of life situations in which it’s not that your wallet is at the end of its life, but rather that you are ready to be done with your wallet.
